I have learned from yesterday’s lesson that knowing WHAT to teach and HOW to teach are the keys to make a lecture interesting and beneficial. That’s why it’s very important for a lecturer to really study and master his topic. It would also be very helpful if he has enough experience concerning his subject matter. But in the absence of such, study and research would suffice. Knowing HOW to teach is another thing and it may be just as equally important. First of all, a lecturer should make a teaching plan. He must have clearly defined objectives and reaching those objectives must be the focus of his whole lecture. He must also observe the Rule of 7 (maximum of seven points per session) and the 30-minute rule (maximum of 30 minutes per session) after which he must give the audience a 5-minute break before resuming to the next session. To make it more interesting and enjoyable the lecturer should employ activities or learning aids where the audience would make use of their five senses—sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste—to deeply impress their minds of the point you want to make. He also has to make sure that he has everybody’s attention that’s why the lecturer should encourage audience participation especially those that are inattentive. Another way to do it is to make sure that your voice is loud enough to be heard by everyone in the room. The lecturer must also maintain a lively and cheerful voice. :-)
Enough time is essential to prepare yourself and your materials before delivering your lecture. It's very important also that you know what to teach and how to teach it so you will not get lost. As the trainor/facilitator, you need to learn/study hard before leading. "You cannot give what you do not have."
In teaching, you always need to have an attention grabber so that your audience will always be focused on what you're saying. I exceeded my time in my lecture so i need to watch it next time.hehe. (Rule of 7 and Rule of 30)
I also learned that we could use a lot of practical illustrations in teaching - in a way that they could understand and relate. So survey the place, the people, and their knowledge so you can include illustrations suited to them.
It we are good teachers, we should know and studied the tips of effective teaching. It is very important to make sure that the message is retained, the audience stays awake, and you receive a positive response from the students. I have learned the rule of 7 and rule of 30 too. Presenting too many ideas in one lecture will overload the audience and they will retain little of what you said. At the very start of your lecture, make sure you have an attention grabber to attract the interest of your students. We can see here how planning is very important. Speak loudly facing the audience with varied pitch of your voice, not monotonous. Better if you stand and move not just sit and read. Use relevant anecdotes, examples and analogies. Make sure the students can relate with it and say it in animated way. Also it is good if the lecture is interactive so that the students will be attentive and they participate. Be conscious too of the audience response so that you can do the necessary adjustment to get their interest. I have learned a lot from the demo on evangelism as gardening process. I have reflected that if you don’t study your lecture, you will be nervous infront. Hehehe Enough preparation is needed not just the visual aids but especially the ideas, facts, and knowledge that you will share. Experience and knowledge regarding your lecture is very important so that you can share it with confidence. I don’t know very well the first part of the gardening process which is the site selection so I don’t know how to explain it well.hehehe I am not confident because i don't know what to say. Better if I give an example or illustration about it so that they can understand it well.

Lesson 2
ReplyDeleteI was reminded again that whatever profession we are in, whether you are a minister or a teacher you need to plan. As what the cliché goes, “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” As what the cliché goes, “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” You need to have either strategic plan or lesson plan. Part of the plan is to determine your lesson objectives. This will serve as your guide or direction to accomplish your goals in mind for the maximum welfare of your students. After planning, gathering of needed materials is the next step. This includes visual aids, powerpoints, props, stories, illustrations, video clips and other relevant materials. Also, give time to study the tips of effective teaching, the timing, and right approach. After doing the planning, gathering of materials, and studying tips, never face your students without practicing your presentation. This is for you to be prepared for any unwanted circumstance like malfunctioning of the presenter, powerpoint slides, etcetera. It also helps you to know the length of your lecture so that you can adjust it to the minimum time. It seems that only few of the teachers are doing this. I met a lot of teachers who are boring and lazy. They just sit, read, and talk with monotonous voice. I don’t like it. And we have the tendency to be like them if we are not prepared in doing our lecture.
