Well, first of all we don’t promote coffee, eh.hehe. (Coffee is good, all the time!)
This video is humorous but somehow true to most if not all of our churches and church members. Most of the time, our churches are not aware of the impact they bring to the people especially to the newcomers. We see here that the couple is seeking for the truth (coffee) but the church (starbucks) has lost these souls by wrong practices:
1. Prejudice – ignoring new comers. Notice the black man sizing them up and looked at them as if they are unworthy to talk to.
2. Condemnation – there is a poster there that says, “Coffee must be hot or cold, if it’s lukewarm, you will be spewed out.” Only Bible readers will truly get that. Newcomers will feel unworthy and will look for other source that will make them feel loved instead of being judged.
3. Church as commercialized business - Churches is supposed to be a place for broken people to find new hope. Too much money is being spent in the wrong places and people aren't actually getting the gospel.
4. No evangelism – If you have heard the barista saying, they don’t go to streets like others to market their coffee, they just provide a real and true coffee (always enrich, no outreach). He also said that a lot of new people come but don’t go back anymore. He justified it by saying, “As long as the beans (truth) have been sown to them, it’s already up to them.”
5. Position Power – You can see the parking lot with labels (ex.: Manager’s Wife Parking Lot,etc.) that’s why the couple parked so far. That will make them feel unwelcome. Other church members also have that attitude inside the church – they already saved a seat that when you happen to sit there, they will drive you away. Some church officials also acting as VIP. This act will divide the church and is not an exemplar to visitors.
The Church will never be perfect, yes, but I hope this can promote a positive change (but maybe in another context rather than Starbucks or coffee) Let’s pray that our churches will be filled with people who are genuinely happy to meet newcomers as well as return visitors and regular members so that we will really draw more souls to Christ.
"Comment on “What if Worship was like an NBA game?”
Well, all I could say is someone must take a stand when we see that the people leading in the pulpit are not doing what they are supposed to be doing. That will be a great disaster to the church. Leaders have a great impact on the brethren because they are supposed to be the role models. Brethren looked up to them. But most of our brethren are acting as if nothing’s wrong and just ignoring everything before their very eyes. Well, some also are overreacting but at least they have the readiness to make a stand. So instead of helping, the immature in faith will just go with the flow or be confused.
This also could possibly be true to our Youth services – entertainment rather than inspirational, or it could also be emotional rather than spiritual. Also, some of us are like the over-loud singer lady at the back – distraction to the worship/worshippers. Hehe
What if worship is like a NBA game
ReplyDeleteSa nba style of worship, very interesting to some because it is entertaining specially the young people that inclined to basketball and liberal people. But to some it is not lalo na ang mga conservative na ang gusto ay solemn kind of worship…this not advisable to us to do… dahil sangayon kay EGW we are peculiar people. We serve and worship not to meet the need or passion of other brethren but we are worshiping the living God… we are the example of new believers so we need to do the right act of worship…only my opinion.
What if Starbucks market like a church?
Maybe the idea of this is good, to make a variety of style of making advertisement to invite people to join the church. The word Starbucks itself is very controversy to other people lalo na ang mga nakakaalam sa illuminati, maybe it is interesting to other especially to coffee drinkers, our church is never tolerate drinking coffee, prerequisites for the baptism, may mga naka post pa sa wall na hindi akma para sa isang tao na naghahanap ng lunas sa kanyang mga pasanin sa buhay o may sakit bagkos ay parang magaatubili ka pa na tuluyang pumasok sa loob ng church…ang isang church ay may mga kapatid na mag we welcome sa mga new comers pero taliwas yan sa ipinakita sa video…maaari pa siguro kung “what if Hospital is like a church” or clinic.
WHAT IF STARBUCKS MARKETED LIKE A CHURCH?- A PARABLE
ReplyDeleteWe know that Starbucks is the number 1 coffee shop in the world because of its product quality and marketing strategy. If they will apply the system of the church in their shops, there is a big possibility that they will experience bankruptcy. Why? First, the location is far from the customers. This is the comment of the two new customers. It is hard to locate just like our churches. While they are going to the place, there are a lot of signboards. It has a signboard where the manager, barista, and even the wife of the manager where they will park their cars. Seems very organize but it would cause headaches to the new comer. They need to see first the right parking space for them. At first, they are about to enter in one place but the door is locked. No signboards where is the right door. When they have entered the place, the greeter is lack of enthusiasm to welcome them. The greeter knew that they are new but he didn’t exert an effort to befriend them. Not only the greeter but even the other customers. This is exactly what happening in our church. Most of the new comers don’t feel the sense of belongingness when they spend their worship service in another church. However, when they were noticed that they are new, they have announced that all the new comers will raise their hands to welcome them. Also, the advertisements or promotional materials are made of letter cuttings and the colors are not that attractive. There are also ads which are in sermon type. They also have a goal to invite 500 new customers who are non-drinking coffee. Just like in our church, we have baptism goal. On the other hand, I like the testimony portion using the Luke 6:38. hehehe Sharing is good because it attracts the customers to listen and be inspired too. hehe They have also used the gift-giving for those who are new comer just like what we are doing in the church. But I can sense that developing relationship and giving value to your customers is better than a souvenir items. The woman in the video is not blessed in her first visit and seems she’s not looking forward to go to that place again. The starbucks has no restroom too so they need to look somewhere else. With regards to the interview of the man in red, he talks about his passion, the number of their customers but then he also mentioned that some of them didn’t go back anymore. But instead of finding ways to solve it, he just accepted the fact that that’s the reality. This video is an eye opener for us on how we can improve or innovate our church system for the worshippers to be blessed and inspired every time they attend the church.
The other video is to be followed.hehehe

ReplyDelete1. What if Starbucks Marketing? A Parable
Wow! I like the marketing strategy of Starbucks presented here. The newcomer is being greeted. There are lots of choices to suit the taste of the customer. They are encouraging the customers to invite others to come and visit the shop. They have bulletin boards to show their activities which encourage the customer to be a part of their shop.
However, if it is compared to the Adventist church, there are things that are not good. The video presented the reasons why many of those who first visited the church are not coming back. First, the regular members are not warm in welcoming the visitors. I can see in some of our churches that the regular members are just the same as the black man who looked at the first timers from head to foot in a sarcastic look and even those in their seats are not aware of the newcomers. It’s not good that only those who are in front should greet the visitors. Everyone inside the church should be warm in accepting newcomers to the church. There are also too many choices given wherein the reason for coming to the church is to worship God. The presentation of the truth should be plain so it will not be difficult for them to see the truth about God. If they will be involved in too many activities when in fact they don’t know these things because they are new, they will be shocked, and decided to leave. Because the church is focusing only on them, they are being proud as shown in the interview to the manager and cashier. Others are not being reached out because the center of the activities is only inside the church as shown in the pictures posted on the board.
I think our church should use also marketing strategies to attract people to God but it should be Christ-centered.
2. What if Worship Is Like an NBA Game?
If our church worship is like the NBA Game our church will always be full of young people because they like lively programming especially in the young generation now. They always want performance inside the church, the reason why many of our young people are not deep in their commitment with God. The church is just being an entertainment not a center for studying of God’s Word. Those church goers who are spiritual, they can’t stand the worship like this, so they will leave the church worship. Our worship should be Christ-centered.
